Meeting Struggling Math Students Where They Are
If you’ve ever wondered why some students never seem to “catch up” in math, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too—facing a classroom full of bright, curious students, but so many already behind. Over the years, I realized the real problem wasn’t my students—it was a common mistake we teachers make (myself included!).
Today, I’m breaking down that mistake, why “learning acceleration” isn’t always the magic bullet, and sharing real strategies that help students finally bridge those math gaps.
The Pandemic’s Ripple Effect: Why So Many Students Are Catching Up
After the pandemic, learning loss hit hard—especially in math. Schools pushed “learning acceleration” or “just-in-time learning” to help students catch up. The idea? Fill in missing skills as you go.
But here’s the truth:
Learning acceleration only works for students who are almost on grade level.
For our most vulnerable learners—students with disabilities, ELLs, those on 504 plans, or struggling with reading—this approach leaves big gaps.

The Common Mistake: Misapplied Learning Acceleration
- Who benefits? Students just a little behind.
- Who’s left out? Students with deeper learning gaps, disabilities, or language barriers.
- Biggest issue: It focuses only on missing math skills, not the whole child.
If you’re still seeing students stuck year after year, it’s time to try something different.
What Works: The Power of RTI (Response to Intervention) 🚦
RTI is a proven framework that helps every student catch up:
- Identifies learning disabilities and behavioral challenges
- Pinpoints missing concepts and skills from previous grades
- Improves instruction for all learners, not just those close to grade level
RTI in Action: Real-World Strategies
- Tier One:
- Differentiate your instruction within the main lesson
- Use visuals, manipulatives, and cooperative learning (small groups!)
- Tier Two:
- For students still struggling, provide small-group interventions (2x/week, 30 min)
- Target specific skills and concepts
- Tier Three:
- More frequent, intensive support for students who need it most
No one gets left behind—every student gets the support they need.
Why RTI Beats Quick Fixes Every Time
Learning acceleration is popular because it’s easy to fit into existing plans. But if you want true mastery—for all students—RTI is your gold standard.
When you use data to identify needs and provide targeted support, students make real progress. Even the most struggling math learners can—and do—catch up!
